Description

Joan de Bethel was a British artist who became famous for her characteristic cat figures. In 1960, she began making cats out of papier-mâché with her husband David de Bethel. One cat took a whole day to make, as Joan de Bethel fired each cat by hand and painted it in great detail. Today, these specimens are extremely valuable - depending on their condition, they are traded for up to 1,000 euros.

After her husband's early death, she had the Rye Pottery make her some unglazed ceramic rough molds. She painted the cats and the pottery fired the figures. After that, demand continued to grow, so Joan asked the Cinque Ports Pottery for larger deliveries. Some of the decorators helped out until, with Joan de Bethel's permission, they also made their own figures.

There are different varieties - including money boxes based on Joan de Bethel's design. These are also extremely rare. We collect Joan de Bethel's cat figurines ourselves and rarely find them for sale. They are also very popular among collectors - especially in Great Britain, the USA and Australia.

In Germany, the cat figures are completely unknown. We also came across the Bethel cats by chance while researching for Sir Mittens. We would like to give this money box to cat lovers who we can infect with our fascination for the great cat figures.
