About Franz Marc
After graduating from high school, briefly studying theology and philology, and completing one year of military service, Marc decided in the fall of 1900 to begin studying painting at the Munich Academy. After four years, Marc, disappointed with the academic lessons, left the art academy and set up a studio. Journeys to Paris and encounters with Impressionism shaped his work. In 1912, Marc published the almanac “Der Blaue Reiter” together with Kandinsky, which gave the artist group its name. The works of the “Blauer Reiter” between 1911 and 1914 paved the way for all modern art of the 20th century. On March 4, 1916, Marc was fatally hit by shrapnel near Verdun and was buried in Kochel am See in 1917.
