About Martin Leman and his art
London-based artist Martin Leman has earned an international reputation for his unique, sophisticated yet naive cat portraits.
Fifty years ago, British artist Martin Leman became a full-time artist, making painting his primary occupation. A turning point in Martin's career was a painting of a small tabby cat in a decorative interior. It sold immediately, thus beginning his long association with cats.
Martin Leman's cats are often depicted in decorative interiors, although the popularity of these paintings is a theme that offers endless variations. With his extensive experience in creating contemporary cat paintings, Leman masters the application of precise colors combined with precise details, bringing these charming feline creatures to life.
"Mona" is obviously inspired by Leonardo da Vinci's famous painting "Mona Lisa." The striking, human-like features, paired with the finely drawn whiskers and striped hair of a cat, make this contemporary figure stimulating and distinctive. As in many of Martin Leman's paintings, there is a strong element of humor. However, these elements of humor and surrealism do not detract from the figure's sophisticated details.
In addition to the Red Rag British Art Gallery, Martin Leman has exhibited at other leading British and international art galleries.
